The third generation of Ford Escape was released in 2012 and saw the model become more modern and sleeker. Ford discontinued the hybrid model from the previous generation. In 2017, the Ford Escape got a face-lift and the rear bigger and the taillights were updated to be rounded as well as many upgrades were made to the interior of the vehicle.

The fourth generation of Ford Escape made its debut in 2019 and gave the vehicle a new sleeker look with a lower profile on the exterior. A 1.5 - liter inline three-cylinder raises the horsepower to 181 and 190 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid made its return and a plug-in hybrid was introduced. New safety features such as a blind-spot monitor, lane-keeping assist, and forward collision mitigation.
