Windshield Visor Tint

Are you tired of being blinded by an ill-placed afternoon sun when driving home? Do you get nervous that strangers might see something in your car that they like and make off with it while you step inside the gas station? Does your car get uncomfortably hot and your AC unit just can’t keep up? Do you think your car would look cooler if the windows were just a little darker?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might benefit from some well-placed visor tint. Visor tint is a simple way to protect your car interior from both the sun and the eyes of strangers - simple enough that you can apply it yourself!

What is Visor Tint?

Visor tint, also referred to as windshield visor tint, is exactly what it sounds like. It refers to a thin strip of tinted material placed on windows to block external viewing and excess light. It can be applied professionally or as a DIY project. There are several varieties of window tint, each with their own pros and cons:

  • Metalized film: Shiny, durable and good at reflecting UV rays, but can interfere with car electronics.
  • Dyed film: The cheapest but least durable option. Blocks UV rays but not much heat. Has color options!
  • Carbon film: Reflects UV rays well, but expensive.
  • Ceramic film: Reflects UV rays well, but one of the most expensive options. Best applied by a professional.
  • Hybrid film: A mix of dyed and metalized film. More durable than dyed, but won’t interfere with electronics as frequently as metalized.

Tints can come in pre-cut sheets and uncut rolls. Precut sheets are more convenient, but uncut rolls allow for a custom fit to your vehicle. They also have a variety of darknesses, thicknesses, and even color options, ensuring that there’s an option for everybody. Rvinyl, for instance, offers over 100 different color options for our window tints.

Benefits of Windshield Visor Tint

There are plenty of benefits to having your windows tinted - aside from the making your windows look cooler, of course. Most of them have to do with how they interact with sunlight.

  • Keeps your car cool: Window tint can help to block sunlight and UV rays from the inside of your car, which keeps it from getting too hot and saves your AC unit some effort.
  • Interior protection: In addition to keeping the interior of your car cool, blocking sunlight and UV rays also prevents your interior details from fading or being damaged by the sun over time. It has the added benefit of minimizing glare while driving!
  • Electronic protection: By keeping the interior of your car cool, your visor tint will actually be protecting the electronic components of your car. Electronics systems, such as in-vehicle navigation or radio, tend to function poorly in extremely high temperatures. Keeping the temperature down will help them operate more efficiently.
  • Privacy: Whether it’s while you’re driving or when you’ve left your car in a parking lot, there will be times you don’t want strangers looking inside. With your windows tinted, your interior will be well-hidden from prying eyes.
vlt laws

Is Visor Tint Legal?

With all of these benefits, you may be tempted to seek out windshield visor tint as soon as possible. However, before you commit, it’s important to know your state laws on the subject. Different states have different limits for visible light transmission (VLT), and what’s legal in the next state over might get you pulled over and ticketed in your home state.

Some states, such as Arizona and New Mexico, allow for VLT at 30% or lower. Others, such as North Dakota or Idaho, require at least 50%. A few states, like California, have a required VLT as high as 70%. These laws are different from state to state, and for front, rear side, back and even visor mirrors, so it’s important to check the individual laws in your area.

It should be noted that most states will allow for tint exceptions, so long as there is a medical reason. Some people are overly sensitive to light due to medical conditions, so provided they carry a doctor’s note, they will be able to have darker tints than usually allowed by state law. Once again, be sure to check the local laws first.

Precut Visor Tint by Rvinyl

Once you know what you want and are sure that you’re legally allowed to tint your car windows, your final choice is whether to have it done professionally or DIY. A professional job can be good for your peace of mind, but they can also be expensive. If you want to save some money, DIY is the better option. The thought of applying your own window tint may be intimidating, but luckily, Rvinyl’s got you covered.

Our Rtint window kits will make tinting your car windows a breeze. We offer over 40 different kits, depending on your car. These kits can be further customized based on the specific model of your car, as well as your tint preferences. The kit offers precut visor tint strips, along with all the tools you’ll need to apply them and a set of easy-to-follow instructions. Our kits ship the day after purchase, so you’ll be able to start your project quickly and easily.

Send us pictures of your finished product and you may be featured on our Instagram and YouTube page. Show off your hard work and enjoy the fact that you saved a lot of money by carrying out the project yourself, instead of paying an installation fee at the auto shop.

All that said, if you still don’t want a kit, consider purchasing one of our window tint rolls and cutting it yourself. This can be trickier than using a precut strip, but if done correctly, it guarantees a perfect fit for your window. Just be sure to check out our guide to heat shrinking so you don't end up with too small a piece.
